LEARN FROM OTHER

Chapter one “LEARN FROM YEMEN”

Someone said that “learning is when we find something new, and later we can eliminate our own and other’s folly. So, we can do something right and prevent something wrong around us. (Mahbub Pasca Al-bahy.)

Learning is Conscious effort of someone to change him or herself. Miss. Fitria (Student of PGSD in Tanjungpura University.)

Learning is how to change our mind to know something. Mr. Hendra (Student of STAIN University.)

Learning is how to find something that we don’t know before and something that we have known but we learn it again. Totok Victor Didik Saputro (Student of Sanatadarma University.)

In the articles before, I have explained many things about learning. I have told that “learning is a must for us.” So, in this article, I would like to tell you how to learn well from other people that have known how to do it.

This is about experience of someone who had learnt in Yemen, his name is Mahbub Pasca Al-bahy. We call him Pasca. He is 18 years old. He was a student of one of boarding schools in Yemen. Actually before going to Yemen, he had studied in one of Yogyakarta boarding schools. There, he learnt about religion and memorizes Al-Qur’an, but for 3 years he couldn’t do it and finally he stopped and went to Yemen. In Yemen, he still learnt about religion. Subhannallah “Amazing”. There, just for 1 year he could memorize Al-Qur’an. In one day, he could memorize 7 until 10 sheet of page (1 juz). How did he do that? Yeah, this is a big question for us? Still read, you will know the answer.

Pasca’s experience gave us a proof that Indonesia hasn’t good education system until now. He said that “many teachers in Indonesia that teach just for money and money, they don’t teach as a good teacher, they just impose their desirability to their students. And they can’t control their emotion well.

Those are because Indonesia has high target in learning. Such as; in the junior and senior high school we have many subjects. It’s about 7 until 10 subjects in one week and plus homework, and we also must understand all of them. The teachers don’t care we understand or not. They just think that we must do what they want! Those targets make students can’t learn well. And finally, when students have homework or examination they will cheat to other. So, the targets of Indonesia education are failed and vain.

Pasca told that “actually, when I was student at junior high school, I was ever absent for 30 days. It was because, I didn’t want to learn and it made me almost wouldn’t go to next class. But, the headmaster said to me. ”Pasca, actually you can’t go to next class. But I still make you can go on because I know you have good potency”. It made me could change my mind and in second grade I could get seventh rank. “We should have teacher like him, but as we know just little teachers of Indonesia can be like that”.

All of Indonesia’s education system is very different with Yemen. Pasca said that “When he learnt in Yemen, he learnt without electricity. There, all of the teachers never forced their desirability to him. The teachers gave him freedom to learn. They just wanted he understood about what he learnt although he just learnt little. The teacher doesn’t think of money. They have good character. There, they always compete in doing something good; even to take rubbish they always compete, no matter teachers or students. If they see rubbish they will take it and throw it to garbage bin, they will not reigning other to do it. Even there, he learnt free without cost with one teacher, his name is Mr. Abdul Aziz. Every day he and his friends always came to their teacher’s home to learn with him. Pasca said that “one day, my friend and I couldn’t come to our teacher house (Mr. Abdul Aziz) and it made him called me, and said “why didn’t you come to my house?” I have prepared food and drink for you” he said like that. He never distinguishes his students, he always glorified people who want to learn with him. He said to me “imam syafi’i ever said that “I get this knowledge is free. So, I also will give this knowledge free.”

When Pasca learnt in Yemen. Yemen was very dangerous because many battles. But when he and his friends want to learn they didn’t care about anything. They just thought of learning. Just for learning with their teacher, they ever met soldier and entered to jail sometimes. So did Pasca. But there, because I liked to learn religion with my teacher in Yemen, I am a brave person to do anything, what I want to do is only learning, said Pasca.

And for the last, these are tips by Pasca how to learn well and memorize Al-Qur’an. He said that:
1.     We mustn’t learn what we don’t need because we have priorities.
2.    We must be able control our selves when learnt.
3.    This is about “restrain our selves” if you want to memorize Al-Qur’an.
4.    Environment and friends will support your way to learn.
5.    Find good teacher is the best way to learn.
6.    If you learn little and you understand, it is better than learn many but you don’t understand.

Well friends, those are the experiences of Mahbub Pasca Al-bahy. I hope this article can give you more informations and inspirations to learn well.

“Everyone who his character (akhlak) is better than you. So, his knowledge (religion) is better than your knowledge (religion).” {Ibnu Hazm}
