BATTLE HYMN of THE TIGER MOTHER “AMY CHUA” Part 1

Tuesday, 3 June 2014

By Rapidah Fitri

Life is just for a moment and really brittle, of course we must make every single breath in our life become meaningful, every second of our time that has been elapsed. “Amy Chua”.

My article before was about John Wood “The Room to Read”. This article told about someone who likes learning very much and care about education in this world. But now, my article will not be like that again. Because this article will tell about “How Chinese’s parents educate their children”.

“Amy Chua”. Have you heard this name?
She is one of mother from china. She has two children, their name are Sofia and Lulu. She educates her children by Chinese culture and she thinks that Chinese way is better than western. Actually friends, this culture is very terrifying for people that haven’t strong heart. Because here, Amy Chua really makes her children did anything that she wants until they can be successful. She never thinks her children like or dislike doing something, she doesn’t care about that. So, this way is like warfare between mother and child.

Amy Chua never thinks that she will lose in educating her children, but one day she was defeated by her child “Lulu 13 years old”. When winter came, Amy Chua taught Lulu how to play piano but Lulu didn’t want to do that. Again and again she always forced lulu to play the piano until finish. Finally, Amy Chua couldn’t control her emotion and asked lulu to stand in front of their house without wearing her jacket. Some minutes had passed, Lulu still stood outside. It made Amy Chua was anxious. Later, Amy Chua asked her to come in to their house. But, Lulu didn’t want to do it because she didn’t want to lose in this battle. Her lips was blue, her body was aquiver. She was still stubborn. Amy Chua was very confused; she said that “Lulu, come in. you will get sick”. But, she still stood; she didn’t care about her body. Amy Chua asked her again and begged until genuflected in front of her. And finally, Lulu came in to their house.

Look friends, from this short story we know that culture of Chinese mother is very dangerous if we haven’t have hard heart. This culture is very controversial, so is this book. Many people said that “Amy Chua is very cruel with their children”. But actually, there are many mothers from another countries who are same like Amy Chua and agreed with her, such as; Irish mother and Jewish mother. Those are because they believe in their children. Amy Chua said that “I just wanted my kids to be the best; they could be because I felt like that”.

Amy Chua said that “these are something that my children mayn’t do”:

1.     Staying in her friend house.
2.    Make a promise to play something with her friends.
3.    Join in drama class in her school.
4.    Complain because I don’t give permission to join in drama class.
5.    Watching TV or playing games in computer.
6.    Choose extracurricular by their selves.
7.    Get score under A.
8.    Do not get number one in all of lessons except sport and drama.
9.    Playing instrument except piano and violin.
10. Do not play piano or violin.

       This is a fact about culture of china. Chinese mother believes that “their children can be the best student. And their achievement in their school is a success in educating their children”. And they believe that;

1.     Homework must be always number one.
2.    Score A- is bad.
3.    Their children must have ability in match 2 years on their friend’s ability.
4.    Parents can’t examine their children in front of other people.
5.    If sometime their children have different opinion with their teacher, parents must support the teacher.
6.    They just can join in an event that can give them medal.
7.    And the medal must be gold.

Yeah guys, these are the fact of Chinese culture. Until now, I haven’t told you about their battle journey yet. Because I am going to tell you about that in Part 2 of BATTLE HYMN of THE TIGER MOTHER “AMY CHUA”.
